Where does a pilot work

I would try to avoid both and hope to find a better way of saying it, such as "A pilot's job is to fly planes".

(By the way, "works on a plane" is ambiguous; "works on" could refer to carrying out mechanical repairs or maintenance.)

I have thought of that, but this is a primary level English assignment. I used 'He flies a plane' to answer its 'What does he do?' Wth the postmen it's easier to answer.

Is 'he works on the plane' same as carrying out mechanical repairs?

The article doesn't affect that aspect. "he works on a/the plane" could mean that his job is carried out on board a/the plane, or that he carries out mechanical repairs or maintenance on a/the plane.

What do you like doing in your free time?
I like going swimming.

Teachers insist 'going' not to be removed in the sentences and she will not change the mark. I would like to know if you can answer: I like swimming. And if I like to swim the infinitive

"I like swimming", "I like going swimming", "I like to swim" and "I like to go swimming" are all correct English and are all valid answers to "What do you like doing in your free time?"
