Where do you go to school

Is "Where do you go to school?" right? To my ear, it doen't mean you ask which school someone goes to, but which place he/she lives in (while going to school).

Which part of speech is 'where' here? Is it an adverb? Then, could you tell me what the 'where' modify in this sentence? The sentence structure--[ (you) (go) (to school) (where) ], is very odd and seemingly broken to me if it conveys the same idea as [ (you) (go) (to which school) ].

I have no opinion on what 'where' is; I am just saying that 'Where do you go to school?' is one of the commonest ways of asking the name of one's school.
