where did you have in mind?

Hi

'I thought we were going out to have dinner tonight.'

'Where did you have in mind?'

Did the answerer hurt the questioner's feelings?

Thanks.

No, she just wants to know which restaurant/place.

Hi MM,

But could it be offensive?

Does it in any situation have a sharp edge to it.

What exactly is giving you this impression?

I have to agree with Marius, IK. In what context you have given us, I see no 'edge' to the response. I suppose we could build a context, but it would require a good bit of help from tone of voice, for instance.

If anything, the original statement ''I thought we were going out to have dinner tonight' could easily have an 'edge' as you put it.

But the response doesn't.

The questioner was already offended before they said 'I thought....' and that is why they phrased it in that way.

For example

Pete " I'm going down the pub to watch footie with the lads now'

Mary

>Mary "I thought we were going out to have dinner tonight" (offended - he is breaking their date)

Yes, Nona's brought more light to the subject

“What do you have in mind?” could be felt as a sharp-edge question, or blunt, depending on the situation, tone and how is asked. Based on the discussed context, I'd feel a little of that if someone asked me that question. To me, to have something in mind is to have something already planned ahead of time. I would get an impressing that person doesn’t feel warmly about me. i.e. Steve – would you
