Where did you go .. vs Where were you ..

Hello

Could someone please explain the difference of these sentences to me?

1. Where were you you last night ?
2. Where did you go last night ?

For question 1, I think we should answer : I was at ...
For question 2, the answer is : I went to ...

But, can we answer "I went to ..." for question no. 1 or vice versa?
Are there any particular reasons?

I thought there are some reasons why we can't answer them reversely..
Is it grammatically ok, ask using was but answered as went?
