Where are you from?

Does that question refer to nationality, ethnicity or race of someone?

I am also a bit confused.

Examples:

1. I am Greek, Greek genes, but I was born in France. Do I have a Greek nationality and French ethnicity or what?

2. I am Greek, Greek genes and was born in Greece. Then I move to France and I live there until death. Do I have Greek nationality & Greek ethnicity?

The question can be used to mean many things. If the asking person already knows you are French, he may mean from what City. He may be instead asking from what Country.

  • If you are at a school board meeting it might mean from which School.
  • If you have a Passport, it might show in what country you were born; and it might also show that your nationality is now French.
