Where

Hi,

What part of speech is the word 'where' in the sentences: He goes where he likes and Simon has also written this excellent piece of analysis of where Gaddafi's death leaves Libya (the latter from the Guardian)? Is it an adverb or conjunction? Can the preposition 'of' be dropped from the Simon has also written this excellent piece of analysis [of ]where Gaddafi's death leaves Libya ?

Thank you.
