Where

Do these sound equally OK?

It depends on the situation where we are.

It depends on the situation (which) we are in.

It depends on the situation in which we are.

Sorry, but they all sound awkward to me. It depends on our situation. If I have to choose, though, I choose the 2nd one without 'which'.

Then what about these?

I know the place where he is.

I know the place in which he is.

I know the place he is in,

I know where he is.

If the first one sounds awkward whereas the last one sounds fine, why?

Only the last sounds normal. Re 1 and 4: place=where.

But when the verb is, say, 'live' instead as:

I know the place where he lives.

I know the place in which he lives.

I know the place he lives in,

I know where he lives.

they all sound OK, right?

(What do you mean by Re 1 and 4, by the way?)

And these?

I live in the city where I study.

I live in the city (that / which) I study in.

I live in the city in which I study.
