When/what/which

Someone told me it is incorrect to write:

" It was yesterday when the victim was killed. "

and "when" should be replaced by "which" or "that". Why not?

Who is that "someone"?
I don't see anything wrong with "when."

"Which" is certainly wrong.
It was yesterday that the victim was killed. (OK)
