When+past continuous to describe action in progress.

Hello everyone,
Just a quick question regarding the usage of past continuous to describe an action in progress in the past whilst something else happens at the time. Have a look at the example below:
- When we were getting/traveling back home, it got really cold.
Or perhaps, should I say:
- When we were on our way back home, it got really cold. ?

Thanks!
