Hi! In the coursebook that we use in school there's a question about the use of "question words" which I had difficulty in explaining ao I'd really appreciate your help. The Question is:
- _____ do koalas sleep?
- During the day.
The answer is WHEN . Ok I agree but one of my students insited that we could use HOW OFTEN. Could we actually use "how often" above in the question if so why or why not??? I desperately need a logical or grammatical etc. explanation......THANKS

Thanks Clive for your answer, actually I do get the difference between the two question words the problem is when we say "during the day" does it show duration or what?
the problem is when we say "during the day" does it show duration or what? It can mean duration in the sense of 'throughout the day' or it can mean 'at some point in the duration'.
With your students, I suggest that you focus on the fact that 'How Often?' is, in simple form, 'How many times in a specified period of time?'
Thank you very much. But I have another problem related to this question Can we use "How long" in the question :
-"How long do you sleep?"
-During the day.
It doesn't sound all right to me but I couldn't understand why??? Would it be all right to use "All day" as an answer to the question when asked with "How long"??
