Grammar

Whenever

Which are correct:

1-Whenever I had cats, I had three.
2-Whenever I had a cat, I had three.
3-Whenever I had cat, I had three cats.

4-Whenever I had a cat, I had only one.
5-Whenever I had cats, I had only one.

3 sounds awful, but I am not sure it is entirely wrong from a grammatical point of view.

Gratefully,
Navi.
