When you separate a sentence into two.

Could you tell me whether the sentence #1 is ok when I want to separate the sentence #2 below?

#1 Jane was on time this morning. That surprised everyone.

#2 Jane was on time this morning, which surprised everyone.

I'm wondering should I use "it" instead of "that" in the sentece #1 or both are ok?

Thank you in advance!
