When you hurt/you're hurting

Hi, teachers.

Father: You can't keep me from seeing my kids.

Mother: When you hurt/you're hurting them, I can.

(The father has hurt them in some way, not physically)

Are "you hurt" and "you're hurting" both OK here or is there anything I should be aware of?
