When you are listing points in an essay...

When you are listing points in an essay, can you say

Firstly,

Secondly,

Thirdly,

Forthly,

Finally,

It does not sound right to me and I want to make sure it is gramatically correct.

Grammatically, it's ok, but I agree with you that it doesn't sound right. If the essay is organized well enough, the points should be obvious (paragraphs do a lot in this regard).
