When you apply / are applying for a job, an interesting CV is essential.

Hello, everyone.

1) When you apply for a job, an interesting CV is essential.
2) When you are applying for a job, an interesting CV is essential.

Can I use both sentences interchangeably?
When speaking in general, is any of them preferred or better in any way?
The Present Simple is normally used for expressing general statements, but I often hear the Present Continous as well (sometimes to emphasize that one thing occurs in parallel to or in the middle of the other one).
