Letter Writing

When writing a letter for someone else do you...?

Do you write the letter as the author, using pronouns like, "I" and "my" or do you write it in the 3rd person, using, "He/She stated" , etc?

You can use either form: Dear Rupert, I am writing on behalf of my friend, Tom Katt, who has unfortunately broken his arm. He will be unavailable to play in your darts team for some weeks. Yours, Ivan Astikov * * * Dear Rupert, I will be unable to play darts for some weeks as I have broken my arm.
