Can I say,

She carries a basket (of fruit) when / while visiting his friend.

She carries a basket (of hamper) when she goes visiting his friend in hospital.

She carries a basket (of fruit) When she is visiting his friend.

"When " is used for certain point of time whereas "While" is used for representing the duration of the action.
moreover, "When " is used in the second part of the sentence when first part of the sentence is finished. whereas "While" is used to describe something which was happening at the same time till other thing was happening.
