When while

What is the difference between when and while?

Top answer

They can sometimes be used interchangeably, but 'when' usually introduces a point in time and 'while' usually introduces a continuing activity during which something else occurred: When I first saw her, I fell in love. While we were talking, her boyfriend arrived.

If you want a rough guideline:

while suggests concurrent activities. when suggests sequential events.

Nero fiddled while Rome burned.
The thieves ran away when the police arrived.

As I said, this is just a rough view. There are other variations on this theme.
