When vs. whenever

Hi, is there a difference between these two:

Going forward, the system will add your friends' details automatically when they log on.
Going forward, the system will add your friends' details automatically whenever they log on.

To me the usage of 'when' seems to refer a specify event whereas 'whenever' refers to a series of events.
