When vs after

Hi,

Should it be

1) When the guests arrived, they gave John his birthday present. or

After the guests arrived, they gave John his birthday present.

Is there any difference or which one of the conjunction is more suitable?

2) We went to visit a castle. Inside the thick, stone walls, we walked around..

or should it be

" Beyond the thick, stone walls, we walked around."

Thanks for the help. I am confused by the answers given in the assessment books...

Hello In your first question, I feel that it is a matter of time. But it is a very fine line and many would argue that there is no difference between the two sentences. When the guests arrived, they gave John his present.
