When to/not to use the articles(a,an,the)

I understand it is a broad topic so I jot down the following examples.

When asked to answer a question like "Are you really really American?"

people usually say, "Yes, I am American!" with an emphasis on the be-verb "am"

Why is it ok to omit article "an" in this case?

In the above question sentences, I used article "an" before emphasis because I think emphasis in this case is somthing distinctive and kidda difinite in terms of its characteristic. Am I flawed?

The way I learned the use of article "a" and "an" is that I dont have to use either of them if the subject I am describing can be generalized.

ex) I have a passion vs. I have passion

what is the subtle expressional difference between using "a" and not using "a" in the above example?

Thank You!
