When to use "would"

Hello,

Here is a sentence which uses "would":

... Look at the pictures. Which do you think would help Janet feel more confidents and relaxed?

I've seen many times and many situations in which "would" is used but not follows any regular rules as I've known. (would like, conditional sentence, frequent action in past). So can anyone explain the usasge of "would"? I read this thread but he just explains several typical cases.

Janet is a university lecturer. She gets nervous when she gives talks at conferences. Look at the pictures. Which do you think would help Janet feel more confident and relaxed?

Thanks Clive.

One more thing unrelavant to "would"'s usage is what the phrase "be to + V" means. You said "if janet were to look at the picture" but I think I'm not clear about its meaning.

Thanks,

Hi,

It's like 'If Janet looked at the picture, . . . '

ie an unreal / hypothetical condition

Hi,

I guessed that but I'm just curious about the way you used Emotion: smile Is that phrase ok if I use in writing? Or just for speaking

'Were' here is the subjunctive to indicate unreality (eg If I were a Martian, . . eg If I were you, . . . ).

The structure you are asking abou is If . . . were to . . . + infinitive.

eg If Tom were to visit Russia, he wou
