I've seen many times and many situations in which "would" is used but not follows any regular rules as I've known. (would like, conditional sentence, frequent action in past). So can anyone explain the usasge of "would"? I read this thread but he just explains several typical cases.

I'm sorry for giving too short sample sentence (or maybe I don't understand what you means by saying: "If Janet were to look at these pictures"). Actually, that is the title in my exercise:
Janet is a university lecturer. She gets nervous when she gives talks at conferences. Look at the pictures. Which do you think would help Janet feel more confident and relaxed?
One more thing unrelavant to "would"'s usage is what the phrase "be to + V" means. You said "if janet were to look at the picture" but I think I'm not clear about its meaning.
