When to use 'were'

Do we use 'were' in hypothetical situations or situations that suggests possibility like:

"If I were you, I wouldnt go." I don't think 'was' here will make sense.
So, which sentence is correct?

"If the situation were reversed, would you have done the same?"
or
"If the situation was reversed, would you have done the same?"
