When to use the word can

When asking my boss to approve something in the financial system, is it okay to say "can you please go in and approve......"

It would be correct to say it that way. However, I would have chosen 'Would you..... ' My response is usually 'Oh yes I thought you were simply asking if I could do it' Maybe I am just awkward

However, I would have chosen 'Would you..... '

I use would rather than can or could because using can or could is asking whether the person is capable of doing something whereas using would is asking them to do something

Just something that has stuck with me because of people asking me if I can do something I often reply 'Yes I can
