When to use "the"?

I would like to refer to this sentence:

"The hardware and the software of photography is treated endlessly on the web and in books"

In the sentence above, the was used for "the hardware", "the software" and "the web". Why isn't "the" used for "books" i.e. "the books"?

What is the proper use for "the"?

Many thanks!

The hardware and the software owe their articles to the of that follows. Other examples: the name of this town the colour of the door the height of the pole the names of my friends The article before web is due to the fact that there is only one web or internet and web is a common noun, not a proper noun. Similarly: The sun is shining.

  • Books is a plural noun referring to an indefinite number of books that are in no way specific and haven't been mentioned before.
  • Therefore no article is needed.
