When to use 'that' as a pronoun

Hi,
How many times has Peter planned to invite her for dinner?
He has planned that four times.
Why does Peter think she is free this evening?
He thinks that because her boyfriend is not in NY this evening?

'That' is a pronoun in both sentences, isn't it?
If that is so, how to know when I can use it
a) To substitute a sentence?
In which other cases?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jim,
Yes, yes. I know that. Sorry, what I meant is that 'that' is a demostrative pronoun, isn't it?"
That" is functioning as a demonstrative pronoun in those examples. It signifies "that thing", "that thought".

Among other functions, yes. It's a lot like your "eso", but not exactly. We use "that" more often.
Right. "that thing", "that thought".
