When to use 'sang'; and 'sung'

which is correct - 'the hymn was sung' or 'the hymn was sang' ?

Sang is the simple past. Sung is the past participle and therefore needs an auxiliary such as have or be.
The hymn was sung.
We sang the hymn.

We had sung the hymn.
We would have sung the hymn, but...
The hymn had been sung already.
