When to use "the"

I got my essay back today and its full of "the" errors.

Sometimes it's suppose to be there and other times it's not suppose to be there.

Can anyone tell me when am I suppose to use "the"??? Im writing a new essay and I wanna stop making those mistakes..

Hi Xsi,

I wish it were so easy. There is a whole book on article usage, called Three Little Words: A, An, The.

The short answer is to use 'the' when you refer to a specific thing like the Eiffel Tower or the hat I bought last week; or when you are referring to a previously-mentioned thing, as in: 'I bought a hat last week, but the hat doesn't fit.'
