I went to the market this morning. In the evening I meet my friend and he asks me, "Where were you, Why were you not picking up the phone?"
Now what should I say
1. I had gone to the market and left the phone at home.
2. I went to the market and left the phone at home.
Basically, I am confused between the usage of past perfect and simple past. And also what if I meet this friend after a week and he asks me the same question? Will there be a change in my sentence then?
