When to use each, although and despite

Hi,
When to use although and when to use despite the fact?
Can I always use despite the fact that instead of although without changing the meaning?

Is it true that although, though and even though are used to introduce a negative statement and the main clause is positive?
eg:
Although he didn't work hard, he still got promoted in that company.

Is it also true that despit/in spite of are used to introduce a positive statement and the main clause is negative?
eg:
In spite of / Despite the fact that he workd very hard, he was not promoted in that company.

Thanks.
