When to use "are" in a sentence

I am, for some reason, torn by this.

"Are grammar and formal writing not taught in schools anymore?"

Is this correct? Or should it be, "is grammar and formal writing not taught in schools anymore?"

I feel like "are" should be used when references plurals. Like "Are grammar and formal writings"?

"Are grammar and formal writing not taught in schools anymore?"

The subject is plural (two things):
1) grammar
2) formal writing
