When to use A

I get confused whether to use "A" or not in some situations.

Eg: You need serious help. or You need a serious help. Which one is right? and why?

If i want to say i have jackets in three colors - Red, blue, and yellow. Can i say "I have three jackets, a red, blue, and yellow"? or do i have to use a for each color?

Is there any way i can look up and clear my confusion on this matters? please let me know.

You can't count help. It's like the flow of water from a faucet. You can't cut it up into pieces so you have one help, two helps, etc. So it can't take "a".

anonymousI have three jackets, a red, blue, and yellow"?

Not good. I'm going to ask
