when to say "periodic" or "periodical"?

one says e.g.: I'm waiting a periodical report.
or: I'm waiting a periodic report.

I'd guess "periodic report". "Periodical report" would mean a report in a magazine or newspaper (or a report about a magazine or newspaper).

well, I'm interested also in more generic formula, e.g.
"This is a magical way!" rather than "This is a magic way!"
it appears more correct.

In general, When do we add the "al"?

Usually when you want to turn the word into an adjective. "Periodic" is already an adjective, while defying logic, "periodical" can be a noun.

In general the "al" turns the noun into an adjective, e.g. magic --> magical.
So is it: "This is a magic trick" or "This is a magical trick"? By comparison to "periodic" and "periodical report".
I feel "magical trick" is more correct. What do you think?
