When the verb at the end of the sentence?

Hello,

can someone tell me when the verb has to be at the end of a sentence? I usaully write:

" i do not know where the mistake is"

is it correct?

If yes, please try to explain me the main rule.

Yes.

Statements and indirect questions take the same word order. Only direct questions invert subject and verb.

Thank you very much! I remember some times ago , i wrote in one e-mail: "i do not know where the mistake was" and my colleagues at work thought I was wrong and laughted at me....

Now i know I was right BUT if I just wrote " i do not know where was the mistake" is it understandable anyway? is it a very big mistake??

ok. I understand. I believe that a lot of people do not know this construction.. At work I often read the above mentioned mistake.. I remember that at school we did not focus that much on this....
