When the supermodel walked down/along the catwalk,

When the supermodel walked down/along the catwalk, I found it hard to look away.

I think "along" works better in the above than "down" because the catwalk is usually very level. Yet, the original uses "down" and that confuses me. What are your comments? Thanks.
