When the chips are down

Hi

I gather that the idiom when the chips are down is informal, but I recently saw it in a formal essay by a native speaker. Could you please tell me how the idiom would sound to you in formal writing?

Thanks,

Tom

Mr. Tom Could you please tell me how the idiom would sound to you in formal writing? Without the whole essay, by which we could judge the style more accurately, it's impossible to say.
