When the bottom gave way

Hello guys,

What does "when the bottom gave way" mean?

I know that "when the bottom gave way she attempted to swim! "means "when the bottom gave way she tried to swim!"

But what does the first part of that sentence really mean?

Top answer

It sounds like you are talking about the bottom of a boat. So it seems that the bottom broke apart and the woman fell into the water, where she had to swim. When something gives way, it slips out from under you or breaks apart.
