When talking about the seasons

Hi, I have another question (so many questions today...)--

I'm not sure when to use "the" when I want to refer to a season.

Eg.
1) Stay warm in winter, or Stay warm in the winter?

2) I went to vacation in summer, or in the summer?

My own interpretation is that when I refer to the season as a general thing, like in (1), it should be just "winter." And in (2), where I want to pinpoint a specific summer, it should be "the summer."

However, I'm not sure if I'm correct...
