When should I use zero article?

Is there a general rule of thumb for this? I always make mistakes constructing sentences with zero article.

What about this sentence for example?

"If you do not have the automatic updating turned on, follow these steps to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent:"

Is the setence still grammatical and does it have the same meaning?

I would omit the article, but I don't think many native speakers would pay very much attention to it if you used it.
