When + past continuous

Hello,
I know we should normally use 'while' as a conjunction introducing the past continuous, for example:
  1. I fell down while I was running to school.
  2. While I was looking through my old photos, I came across a photo of my great-grandfather.
  3. Sometimes we can see 'when' used instead of 'while'. Is it also ok?:
  4. I fell down when I was running to school.
  5. When I was looking through my old photos, I came across a photo of my great-grandfather.
Thank you for your help.

Hi We can use both 'while' and 'when' when describing that something occured while some 'long' action was going on.
