when meeting/facing some failures

His son was hoped to be proud even when meeting/facing some failures.

Hi,
Do both meeting and facing fit in the above and mean about the same to you? Thanks.

The sentence as a whole is grammatically and semantically questionable; among other things, meeting and facing may or not may not be equivalent, depending on what meeting means. His son hoped to maintain his pride even when meeting/facing failure.

Hi,

His son was hoped to be proud even when meeting/facing some failures.

Do both meeting and facing fit in the above and mean about the same to you?Yes, more or less, although I prefer the word 'encountering', or perhaps the more active 'handling'.

I have concerns about the awkward-sounding passive, 'was hoped to be'. Who hoped this? Why not be more active and direct?
