This is my question.

When it requires de-emphasis,non-essential material in a sentence is set off by a:

Period.
Pair of parentheses.
comma.
colon.

I say the answer is pair of parentheses. is this correct. Thanks

Jim is right of course, that is the main job of parentheses.

But just because you set me to thinking about it-- the comma preceding a non-restrictive clause also serves to help us understand the non-essential nature of that addition to the sentence, eh?
