When is earlier today

"Earlier today they further expanded upon this with the opening of their official “ygconcert” Youtube page."

What time does Earlier today denote in the above sentence? The beginning of today? Otherwise yesterday or something?

Thanks very much the quick response, Clive:)

So as for my quotation, earlier today means sometime prior to the time for the writer to write the sentence?

So the range of earlier today doesn't contain yesterday? It's only within today?
