When interruptrs procede a coordinating conjuction

How should you punctuate?

1) They played the game, but, of course, they lost.

2) They played the game, but of course they lost.

3) They played the game, but of course, they lost.

I choose to use the style of number three when this situation arises.

Too many commas for such a short sentence. I'd use this: 2) They played the game, but of course they lost. or perhaps this: They played the game, but they lost, of course.
