When I was writing a letter to you, I did not realize that I was a member already.
"When I was writing a letter to you, I did not realize that I was a member already."
Is the sentence above is grammatically correct, given that I have been being a member (from the past until now)? Can't I write "...., I did not realize that I am a member"?
Thanks so much.
