when I pass / When I passed

My father promised to buy me a bcycle when I ---- the exam.

a) pass

b) passed

1. My father promised yesterday but my exam is tomorrow and I am speaking now. So how would you fill in the gap?

2. Could we replace the "when" with "If" in the same case. i.e: If I pass/passed the exam
