Talking about divorce and explaining the process

-When I filed, his lawyers called and asked for a meeting.


In this sentence, is it ok to not say “for divorce” if you have been speaking about it for a while or is it a must to say “for divorce”.


Filed is a transitive verb but I hear this usage all the time in American shows.
