When I don't do my homework vs when I didn'tt do my homework

Hi there,

I have a simple question. Which one is correct?

1. My teacher always gets mad at me when I didn't do my homework.

2. My teacher always gets mad at me when I don't do my homework.

In my opinion, the first sentence should be the correct one because students are supposed to do their homework before class begins. So, doing homework is already in the past whenever the teacher checks student's homework. However, others suggested that the simple present tense be used in the time modifier as in sentence 2.

We're not native English speakers, so your explanation would enlighten us all. Thank you.
