Can I say,

(a) I am painting when I am free.

(b) She is painting because she is free.

(c) She likes painting when she is free.

(d) She likes painting during her free time.

These all work for me except (b). "Because she is free" suggests the larger sense of "free." She is not in jail. She is not a slave. She does not have worrisome burdens.
