When do we use "did"

Good day,

My name is Jackie, and I'd like to ask how I can more properly explain how to use "did." I know the people who are using to speaking in English know how to use this word, but the problem is that I'm having a hard time explaining it, so maybe you coud help me out.

E.g. Mary and Martha went to the market yesterday. They bought some groceries.

Correct ways to ask:

Who went to the market?
When did Mary and Martha go to the market?
What did Mary and Martha buy?

My main problem is that I don't really know how to explain why the latter two sentences used the word "did" and why the first sentence didn't.

Thank you, and I'd love to hear from you guys soon. :-) Any help will be much appreciated.
